What is SomaYoga?
At Twin Temple Yoga, we practice SomaYoga—a unique and deeply transformative blend of traditional Yoga philosophy, modern Somatics, and the science of the nervous system. Developed by Thomas Hanna and refined by the pioneers at Yoga North International in Duluth, MN, SomaYoga is more than just a movement class; it is a path to becoming the hero of your own health and well-being.
Is SomaYoga for You?
SomaYoga is an "everyone" practice. It is particularly effective for:
Chronic Pain Relief: Addressing persistent back, neck, shoulder, and hip issues along with other areas of the body.
Body Recovery: An ideal practice for athletes or those engaged in strenuous activity looking for deep recovery and injury prevention. People who do yard work, have physical jobs, are outdoor hobbyist, busy parents, dancers, etc.
Releasing Stress & Anxiety: Using the body as an anchor to regulate the nervous system and find quietude.
Mindful Aging: Improving mobility and stability through gentle, intelligent movement.
Join a class and move with curiosity, not just effort.
The Science of the "Soma"
SomaYoga focuses on neuromuscular re-education. Most chronic pain and tension are the result of "Sensory-Motor Amnesia"—a state where the brain has literally forgotten how to relax certain muscle groups due to stress, injury, or repetitive habits.
By using slow, conscious Somatic movements, we communicate directly with the nervous system. We don't just "stretch" a tight muscle; we teach the brain how to release it from the inside out.
Key Principles of the Practice:
Inside-Out Awareness: We use meditation and breathwork to train the mind to notice the subtle signals of the body. This interoceptive awareness is the first step toward self-healing.
Trunk-to-Outward Focus: We work from the center of the body—the "trunk" or core—and move outward to the limbs. When the center is stable and mobile, the rest of the body follows.
Therapeutic Asana: We apply a therapeutic lens to classic yoga poses (asanas), making them accessible, functional, and deeply restorative for the spirit, mind, and body.
Ayurvedic Roots: SomaYoga is Ayurvedic in nature, recognizing that each individual is unique. We move in harmony with our natural rhythms to bring the system back into balance.
